House of Skin
ハウス・オブ・スキン
I am Adrian Tripod, the director of this place, the House of Skin.
私はエイドリアン・トライポッド。ここ「ハウス・オブ・スキン」の院長だ。
In a sense, my present incarnation was generated by the mad dermatologist Antoine Rouge.
ある意味、私のこの姿は、狂気の皮膚科医アントワーヌ・ルージュによって生み出されたといえるだろう。
The House of Skin began its existence as a residential clinic for wealthy patients who were treated for severely pathological skin conditions induced by contemporary cosmetics.
ハウス・オブ・スキンは、富裕層向けの居住型クリニックとして創始された。現代の化粧品を原因とする深刻な皮膚疾患の治療が目的だ。
Antoine Rouge, who at the time, was considered little more than a gifted technician seized control of the house many years ago and guided it towards a more fantastic species of research.
当時、才能ある技術者として名を馳せていたアントワーヌ・ルージュは、数年前にこのハウスの経営権を掌握し、より高次の研究へと先導した。
There was much opposition to the Rougian ascendency in certain high places.
ルージュ派の台頭には、一部の高官たちから強い反対意見もあった。
The House is undeniably in decline.
ハウスはまぎれもなく衰退の一途を辿っている。
Somehow, without my direct comprehension of it, It has fallen into the hands of my two sullen interns.
どういうわけか私が理解しえぬうちに、ハウスは得体の知れぬ研修医ふたりの手に落ちてしまった。
Their purposes are entirely opaque to me.
彼らの目的はまったく理解できない。
As are the purposes of so many others.
他人の心の中を覗くことなどできないのだから。
Before the disappearance of Antoine Rouge, there were many strange creatures in residence here.
アントワーヌ・ルージュが姿を消す以前、ここにはおかしな生き物がたくさんいた。
But for sometime now, there has only been one.
しかしここしばらくは、ただひとりだけだ。

I believe I have noted a white-ish, aerated amorphous affluence oozing from his ears.
彼の耳から、空気を含んで膨らんだ白状の分泌物が滲み出ているのに気づいてしまった。
I am not quite certain.
確信はない。
My interns have also noted the deadly emergence of the secretion which we call Rouge’s foam.
しかし研修医たちもまた、この“ルージュの泡”と呼ばれる末期症状に気づいていた。
It has been mandatory to cremate all those who have died from Rouge’s Malady.
ルージュ病による死病者の遺体は火葬することが義務付けられている。
Although during the period of secretion and hemorrhage, the various pathological fluids are relatively harmless, even sensually attractive.
分泌と出血の症状の期間中は、体液は比較的無害で、官能的に魅力的でさえある。
These fluids soon develop a virulence which can be devastating.

There was a time when Rouge’s Malady appeared only in post-pubertal human females.

The Institute of Neo-Venereal Disease

It is, perhaps, natural that in my present confusion. I should find my way to the Institute of Neo- Venereal Disease.
いまの混乱状態からすれば、私が新性病研究所にたどり着いたのは恐らく当然のことだろう。
In the exhilarating days of Rougian administration, there was much collaboration between the House and this institute.
ルージュ派の最盛期には、ハウスとこの研究所は深い協力関係にあった。
My former colleague has somehow withdrawn.
どういうわけか、元同僚がひきこもるようになってしまった。
He himself has contracted a species of venereal disease from one of his patients.
患者の性病に感染したのだ。
He was once a fierce sensualist but he has now become a pure metaphysician.
かつては強烈な官能主義者だったが、いまや純然たる形而上学者となってしまった。
His body has begun to create puzzling organs.
彼の体は不可解な器官を作り始めた。
Each one very complex, very perfect, unique yet seemingly without function.
それぞれが非常に複雑で、極めて完璧で、唯一無二でありながら、いっさい何の機能も持たない。
As each is surgically removed, it is quickly replaced by another equally mysterious.

He has taken to breaking into the specimens room and stealing the jars containing these organs.
